Second victory for Petra Majdic in Oberhof

Second victory for Petra Majdic in Oberhof

The best Slovenian cross-country skier Petra Majdič has started 2010 fabulously by claiming two victories in just three days at the Tour de Ski series in Oberhof, Germany.

On the New Year’s Day, she won the Tour de Ski prologue and on 3 January, she claimed a win in the Tour classic sprint. The victory on 3 January is Majdič’s 19th in career. On 2 January, she finished the 10km cross-country skiing race 10th blaming temperature changes and unsuitable grip was used on skis for results.

After the first freestyle sprint victory on 1 January Ms. Majdic said: “It has been fantastic and everybody just can’t stop smiling. Yesterday, we wished each other a happy and successful New Year and this is how 2010 has indeed been so far. The ski service team did excellent work as I had best skis among competitors and I of-course made the most of them”.

On 2 January, the mood of Slovenian cross-country team members was less cheerful as Ms. Majdič’s competitors started to catch up with her after the first classical sprint circle. Her skiing speed slowed down due to problems with ski grip and she finished the race 10th.

On 3 January, sprint being Majdič’s discipline was scheduled at the Tour des Ski competition and once again she was unbeatable and won over World Cup favourite Justyna Kowalczyk. Pleased with victory she said after the skiing race competition: “I have just proven I can still win a sprint. I failed to win in Kuusama and in Rogla, but I managed to claim a win in Oberhof. Sprint is scheduled as a cross country discipline also at the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games and this victory is important for boosting my confidence.”

By winning two victories last weekend Ms. Majdic proved once again to be the best Slovenian sportswoman over the past years.
